What you will do:
Capture, restrain, handle and mark wildlife
Assist with capture of wildlife and restrain captured wildlife by injection of immobilizing drugs and/or by physical restraint. Collect biological and blood samples from captured wildlife for DNA extraction, physiological tests, and disease tests. Attach radio-transmitters or other marking devices. Dissect mortalities to determine cause of death. Occasionally use firearms to euthanize injured or dangerous wildlife.
Assist staff in monitoring animal populations
Monitor status of radio-marked animals with radio-telemetry to determine locations, mortality, movements, cause of death, habitat use, etc. Monitoring and capture may include flying in fixed-wing and helicopter aircraft, use of ATV, or snowmobile. Conduct trend surveys to determine wildlife population density estimates and herd composition. Record data in the field and in computer files. Summarize and tabulate data.
Collect, verify, maintain and analyze research data and write reports describing findings
Record and enter data into computer files and verify for accuracy. Conduct appropriate analysis on collected data. Write reports and assist in preparation of non-peer reviewed publications that detail the research findings. Use, create, and analyze ArcMap data themes including habitat, telemetry locations, and other environmental/landscape GIS layers. Speak or provide written information on the research to staff or managers, at professional meetings, and to the public as requested.
