Natural Resource Specialist 1 (Fisheries Project Assistant-La Grande)

• Participate in the collection of scientific data at hatcheries in Northeast Oregon. Collect juvenile salmon and steelhead from hatchery ponds with seines, crowders, and dipnets. Measure lengths and weights of juvenile and adult salmon and steelhead. Collect snouts from coded-wire-tagged fish. Use computerized data collection systems. Conduct coded-wire tag retention checks. Enter data on hand-held data recorders. Walk streams to estimate redd and adult salmon numbers. Sample adult carcasses, measure length, collect scales, fin rays, otoliths, determine sex, and assess egg retention. Conduct creel surveys of anglers. Participate in collection of scientific data in streams using trapping, snorkeling and electrofishing techniques to assess juvenile salmon where necessary.

• Assist project leader in preparation and writing of periodic reports, and design graphics for presentations or reports including figures and tables. Deliver project presentations at professional meetings. Assist in developing spreadsheet and database models for data analysis. Tabulate and summarize data in formats suitable for written and oral presentation. Use standard statistical techniques for data analysis. Maintain and collect data from PIT tag arrays located in streams or at hatchery facilities. Query performance of PIT arrays. Take a lead role in maintaining Access databases. Assume a lead role determining adult salmon age composition by preparing and ageing scales and fin rays.

• Purchases and maintains field sampling equipment including nets, traps, data collection stations, and data recorders.
