Member Spotlight: Derek Broman

ORAFS Liaison (2024 – 2025)

Current Position: Game Program Manager, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Salem, Oregon

Biographical Sketch: A native Iowan, my early career experiences were in entomology, aquatic macroinvertebrates, water quality, and stream restoration ecology. After a short stint with grouse, I have spent nearly two decades focusing on carnivore and furbearer research, conservation, and management. My academic pursuits and career have provided me professional experiences in the Midwest, East Coast, Gulf Coast, and finally the West Coast having resided in Oregon since 2015.

In addition to the TWS parent organization, I have been an active member of the Iowa Chapter, New England Chapter, and the Texas Chapter of TWS where I was a committee chair and graduate of the Early-Career Professional Training of the James G. Teer Conservation Leadership Institute. My time as an engaged member of the Oregon Chapter of The Wildlife Society has been very memorable and I am incredibly proud of this chapter!

The Oregon Chapter of the American Fisheries Society (ORAFS) is one of the biggest AFS chapters in the US and as the appointed liaison to ORAFS, I ensure communication pathways remain open between the two chapters and look for opportunities for collaborations, trainings, workshops, and member engagement. Please reach out if you have any questions or interest in ORAFS!
