The Oregon Chapter of The Wildlife Society (ORTWS) is hosting a two and a half day RSF workshop, taught by Dr. Ryan Long from the University of Idaho. The workshop will be held May 21–23 at Oregon State University, Cascade Hall Room 118. The Oregon Chapter of The Wildlife Society (ORTWS) is hosting a four day Continuous-Time Movement Modeling Workshop, taught by Christen H. Fleming, Assistant Professor, University of Central Florida, Department of Biology, and Michael J. Noonan, Assistant Professor, University of British Columbia, Department of Biology. The workshop will be held July 21-25 at Peavy Forestry Science Center, Room 125, Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon.
TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:
Animal tracking datasets often come with substantial autocorrelation and location error that render classical analyses invalid and cause differential biases. Continuous-time stochastic-process methods offer a solution to these challenges.
This workshop will provide beginners with an introduction to important movement ecology concepts, as well as hands-on experience using the award-winning “continuous-time movement modeling” (ctmm) Rpackage to apply advanced statistical methods to tracking data.
Participants will learn how to:
- Fit continuous-time movement models,
- Interpret model parameters,
- Perform home-rangeanalysis,
- Estimate habitat suitability,
- Perform path reconstruction.

The Oregon Chapter of The Wildlife Society (ORTWS) is hosting a four-day Writing with Clarity workshop, taught by Michelle Baker, PhD, from The Conservation Writing Pro. The owner, Dr. Michelle Baker, acts as a federal contractor for government agencies and works with NGOs to help environmental scientists produce clear, easily accessible documents. https://www.conservationwritingpro.com/wswc
Environmental scientists are rarely taught how to write outside the academic setting, yet writing for federal and state agencies or nongovernmental organizations comprises the bulk of their work. Concepts such as understanding your audience, context, and purpose or selecting a writing style are vital to clear communication. Environmental scientists need a process, and when they work without one, they struggle with procrastination, writer’s block, and anxiety.

INTRODUCTION TO TREE VOLES WORKSHOP - JOIN US VIRTUALLY OR IN CORVALLIS, OREGON
When: July 26, 2024 (An optional field excursion July 27-28 will take 30 participants to explore occupied red tree vole habitat and possibly even see researchers capture one of these rare animals).
Description: The Oregon Chapter and the Western Section of The Wildlife Society team up to demystify the all three members of the genus Arborimus - the enigmatic red, Sonoma, and white-footed tree voles of the Pacific Northwest. Join us by Zoom or in-person at Oregon State University (Corvallis, OR) for a full day lecture on tree vole natural history, survey methods, population status, threats, management considerations, and permitting.

Preservation of Trees During Construction: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach

Course Details:
This workshop will cover the basic principles of tree preservation for numerous professions involved in property development and construction projects (e.g. consulting and municipal arborists, tree care workers, engineers, architects, planners, real estate developers, and sitework construction trades). A multi-disciplinary approach is emphasized, because careful coordination throughout all phases of construction helps to ensure successful preservation of existing trees. Consulting arborists will share the process as laid out in the newest edition of Managing Trees During Site Development and Construction Best Management Practices. They will also review real-world project examples that were successful, as well as some that presented opportunities for improvement.
Instructors:
Ryan Gilpin, Principal Consultant at Nidus Consulting in Portland, Oregon
Ryan specializes in tree and construction projects, completing hundreds of projects and training several consulting arborists along the way. He is chair of the Tree Care for Birds Committee, regularly training arborists in working responsibly around wildlife.
Kyle Offerdahl, President, General Tree Service and Owner | Principal at Pacific Consulting Arborists
Kyle has been practicing arboriculture since 2007. Kyle earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University. Kyle’s passion for tree care began in college while working in the landscape design business. He is an ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist, a Board-Certified Master Arborist®, ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualified, ISA Certified Arborist Municipal Specialist, and he is Tree and Plant Appraisal Qualified through ASCA. Kyle has acted as Vice President of the Oregon Landscape Contractors Association, he currently sits on the ANSI A300 committee, and he is an Ambassador for the American Society of Consulting Arborists.

ORTWS is hosting a Field Skills Workshop September 24 - 25, 2023 at Ochoco Divide Campground in central Oregon! This workshop introduces basic field skills in wildlife management and research and will focus on camping gear/setup, field vehicle use, navigation practices, and field safety. The workshop is targeted toward current students and recent graduates and will provide participants with in-depth instruction in skills applicable to wildlife work in remote settings.
Meals: Dinner will be provided Saturday evening and breakfast will be provided Sunday morning. Participants will need to provide their own lunches and snacks.
Gear: Participants will need to bring clothing, toiletries, pillow, eating utensils, backpack, and water bottles. If participants have basic camping gear (tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, headlamp) they are encouraged to bring it, but these items can be provided upon request at no extra cost.
Transportation: Participants are responsible for their transportation to and from the workshop. Carpooling is encouraged and group transport may be available once registration closes.
Registration: Registration is $10/person and is limited to the first 18 participants. Registration is now open and will close on September 16, 2022.
